Remember for SSATTB a cappella

Reviews

'Remember', performed by Coro Volante under the direction of L. Brett Scott, is a highlight of the album. The powerful voices of the choristers give this piece a hypnotic quality that captivates the listener.

This composition for mixed 6-part a cappella chorus was read by the First Readings Project, led by composer/conductor J. David Moore, in Minneapolis, on 7 May 2019. It was later recorded by Coro Volante, Brett Scott, conductor, and is included on my 2023 release, remember (Neuma 183).

The text is by Christina Rossetti (1830-1894)

Remember me when I am gone away,
         Gone far away into the silent land;
         When you can no more hold me by the hand,
Nor I half turn to go yet turning stay.
Remember me when no more day by day
         You tell me of our future that you plann’d:
         Only remember me; you understand
It will be late to counsel then or pray.
Yet if you should forget me for a while
         And afterwards remember, do not grieve:
         For if the darkness and corruption leave
         A vestige of the thoughts that once I had,
Better by far you should forget and smile
         Than that you should remember and be sad.
