Positive/Negative for piano, harp & percussion
Positive/Negative unfolds in two parts. The opening section focuses on certain sonic relationships developed between the various instruments of the ensemble. Fast, minimalist-type material then enters over the latter part of the opening and takes over, bringing the work to a rousing close.
This composition was premiered 17 October 1991 in Sprague Hall at the Yale School of Music on a New Music New Haven program, Jacob Druckman, director. The players were Pippa Borisy (piano); Tara Alterman (harp); and D. Thomas Toner and Todd Scot Fishman (percussion). The two percussionists play crotales, vibraphone, xylophone and marimba.
